Welcome back to the Live Life Off Leash blog!
We have been talking a lot about staying active with our pets. We all know it’s important to keep active to stay healthy. In our blog “Fitness for Longevity” we discussed all the benefits of having a physically fit dog. And in our blog for the “Pet Reset” we visited how important a healthy weight was to your pet’s long life. In this blog we are going to discuss active dogs and some additional support they may need for their joints.
Highly active dogs and certain breeds of dogs can be more subject to joint problems than other dogs. For example a police dog or a ranch dog are going to not only be incredibly physically active, but they also will be doing more rugged work than a jog around the park. Dogs that are involved in work or sport generally need some kind of joint support. Agility, fly ball, ranch work, police/military work, sled dogs, hunting dogs, service work like search and rescue or seeing eye dogs to name a few. All these things and more are types of work that dogs could use joint support for.
This also goes for certain breeds of dogs as well. While some dogs, especially mutts, may never have joint issues, some breeds like German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers can be notorious for joint issues, sometimes beginning fairly young in their lives. Joint problems can be the result of a number of variables, but one thing we can do is know what our dogs may be up against in terms of genetics or work/play.
We recommend starting a joint supplement before issues appear. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The sooner you start giving your dog’s body the support it needs to maintain healthy joints the fewer problems they will have down the road.
One way to begin the process is simply to make sure they have a high quality dog food that has the nutrients to maintain normal health. Then for that extra TLC, we highly recommend a support supplement like pawTree’s Joint Support Plus or Joint Support Plus with CBD. These supplements not only help maintain the health of the joint, that help to prevent further damage to already damaged joints. The more support the joints have the less potential pain your pooch will have.
